Description

This is a copper and bronze mix Thai pendant with Siddhartha Buddha in a Jatukam Ramathep style, round shape and with sacred geometrical yant (yan) on the reverse side. This pendant is part of a Tok Hak series that includes different colors, solid silver, and a black print on the silver amulet. This series was released in the year 2007 and caused a major stir in the Thai community.

The reverse side has an intricately designed yan design with star patterns, Pali script, Chinese zodiac animal symbols, and the Wat Mahathat chedi in the center – from Nakhon Si Thammarat. This is common for Jatukam-style amulets.

We have just one of these collector’s pendants and haven’t seen anymore at the temple for around three years. Once Thais buy these – especially buying the entire series – they hold onto them. We usually only see them after someone passes and they have no descendants – sometimes they are given back to the temple.

Why Do Thais Wear Tok Hak Buddha Amulets?

Here in Thailand there are many people who collect and wear tok hak Buddha amulets for protection and to bring good fortune, but these amulets have a specific meaning. The term “tok hak” refers to “broken neck” or “decapitated,” where the head of the amulet or Buddha image has been broken off. While at first glance, it might seem like this would diminish the value or power of the amulet, in Thai belief, tok hak amulets are considered to be just as powerful, if not more, due to their unique history.

Here’s why Thais wear these amulets:

Belief in Imperfection as Power – Thais see the broken head as a sign that the amulet has undergone an ordeal or survived something intense, which increases its spiritual potency. The break can symbolize overcoming obstacles, reflecting the wearer’s own resilience and strength.

Cultural Significance of Buddha Amulets – Buddha amulets, in general, are worn for protection against physical and spiritual harm. Even in a broken form, they are still revered and believed to offer protection, guidance, and blessings.

Historical and Family Connection – Some people inherit tok hak amulets from family members, making them even more meaningful. The broken amulet could have a long personal or historical connection, adding to its value as a spiritual object.

Sacrifice and Humility – Wearing a broken amulet can also be a reflection of Buddhist values like sacrifice, humility, and impermanence. The idea that nothing in life is perfect or permanent aligns with Buddhist teachings, and the tok hak amulet is a powerful reminder of these truths.

These amulets are often treated with deep respect in spite of being broken. For many Thais, the blend of spirituality, personal belief, and cultural tradition makes the tok hak amulet a very attractive amulet to purchase.
