Who Is the Laughing Buddha (Budai)?
The Happy or Laughing Buddha is known as Budai (or Hotei in Japan), a figure that originates from Chinese folklore and later became a popular symbol in many parts of Asia, including Thailand. Budai was a real monk who lived in China during the 10th century. He was known for his large belly, cheerful demeanor, and a big cloth sack that he used to carry gifts and food, which he often distributed to the poor and needy. His kindness and carefree attitude earned him the nickname “Laughing Buddha” because he was always depicted laughing joyfully.
The reason he’s shown laughing or happy is due to his contentment, generosity, and the joy that comes from living a simple, compassionate life. In many traditions, Budai is seen as a symbol of good fortune, abundance, and happiness, which is why amulets of the Laughing Buddha are popular. He embodies a carefree, positive energy that people aspire to bring into their own lives.
Although not directly connected to the historical Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama), Budai became associated with Maitreya, the future Buddha who is expected to bring peace and happiness to the world. His joyful, abundant nature is seen as a reflection of the happiness that Maitreya will bring. These amulets are often worn to attract luck, wealth, and happiness, serving as a reminder to approach life with a light heart and a spirit of generosity.
