Description

Pearl White/Yellow Phra Pidta Jatukam-Style Amulet

Today you can save $20 off the regular price of this amulet. We only have 1 of these. If you want it – order and then write us at our Contact page.

This one is a pearl-white Phra Pidta amulet with a bright yellow background. There are nagas on the front of the amulet and it appears to be made of nickel metal material. The reverse side has a very detailed and intricate yantra design featuring Pali symbols around the outside and a circular arrangement of Chinese animals symbols for Chinese years calendar.

This one we found at Wat Tham Seua in Krabi, Thailand – one of our main Theravada Buddhist temples. The symbol at the center of the reverse side is Luang Por Jamnian’s swirling infinity mark. We have just one of these amulets. We’ve not seen them with the peal shell finish and the bright yellow together before. This is a lovely combination. The yellow is like a melted ceramic glaze background, common with this circular coin style amulet that resembles the style of the Jatukam Ramathep amulets from Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Who Is Phra Pidta – and Why Important to Buddhists?

Phra Pidta (often called the “Closed-Eyed Buddha”) is a well-known figure in Thai Buddhism, especially in the Theravada tradition. His unique imagery, covering his face with both hands, symbolizes a state of deep meditation, inner peace, and spiritual protection. The Phra Pidta amulets are highly revered and widely worn by those seeking specific blessings and protections. Let’s dive into his significance, the amulet’s purpose, and why people choose to wear it.

1. Historical Background and Importance in Theravada Buddhism

  • Phra Pidta is not a Buddha in the traditional sense but rather he is a representation of an enlightened monk or disciple of the Buddha who has attained supreme mindfulness/concentration – and Jhana. Some legends link him to Phra Sivali, one of the disciples of the Buddha known for bringing prosperity and good fortune.
  • The closed-eyed posture of Phra Pidta symbolizes the idea of withdrawing from the sensory world, focusing inward on mental purity and spiritual enlightenment. This practice of turning away from external distractions mirrors the path of meditation in Theravada Buddhism, where monks practice mindfulness and concentration to reach higher states of awareness.

Phra Pidta is important because he represents the internal journey to enlightenment by closing off the senses to achieve mental clarity and freedom from worldly desires. His image has become a symbol of protection, prosperity, and spiritual strength for those who carry or wear his image.

2. State of Mind of Phra Pidta

  • The state of mind represented by Phra Pidta is one of complete detachment from worldly distractions. His closed eyes signify deep meditative absorption (similar to the concept of Jhana in Theravada meditation) and self-containment, where the practitioner is focused solely on the inner world of mindfulness and insight. By covering his face, Phra Pidta symbolizes the act of shutting out the five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch), which are seen as sources of distraction and attachment. His posture reflects a state of mental purity and spiritual discipline where the practitioner seeks to avoid the defilements that come from attachment to the physical world. The amulet is a powerful reminder to stay mindful and remain focused on the inner self instead of getting caught up in external desires and distractions.

3. Why Purchase and Wear a Phra Pidta Amulet?

  • Protection from Harm. One of the main reasons people purchase and wear a Phra Pidta amulet is for protection. It is believed to shield the wearer from harm, negative energies, and evil spirits. The act of covering the face suggests that harmful influences cannot affect the wearer because the amulet creates a protective barrier.
  • Prosperity and Income. Phra Pidta is also associated with wealth and good fortune. Many believe that wearing this amulet helps attract financial success and business prosperity. It’s often worn by people in business or those seeking material gains, as Phra Pidta is seen as a figure that brings good luck while keeping negative energies away.
  • Mindfulness and Spiritual Growth. The amulet serves as a spiritual reminder to focus on inner peace, mindfulness, and detachment from external desires. For those on a spiritual path, wearing Phra Pidta is like carrying a symbol of the Buddha’s teachings to stay mindful, disciplined, and focused on one’s internal state.
  • Overcoming Obstacles. Some wearers believe that Phra Pidta helps them to overcome challenges and obstacles in life similar to Ganesh – the Hindu God. The concept of closing one’s eyes to distractions and fears can be interpreted as a metaphor for rising above difficulties and staying focused on one’s goals.

4. What Is This Amulet Good For?

  • Protection from Physical and Spiritual Harm. Phra Pidta amulets are considered powerful protectors, especially from harm caused by evil spirits, black magic, or dangerous situations. Many believe it creates a strong spiritual shield around the wearer.
  • Attracting Wealth and Good Fortune. As mentioned, this amulet is also associated with bringing wealth, business success, and good luck. Those in competitive industries or business fields often wear the Phra Pidta amulet for these reasons.
  • Spiritual Mindfulness and Meditation. For individuals focused on their spiritual path, the Phra Pidta amulet represents a constant reminder to maintain mindfulness and inner focus. The image of the monk closing his eyes serves as a metaphor for looking inward and staying focused on one’s spiritual journey.
  • Avoiding Negative Influences. The closed-eye posture symbolizes avoiding worldly temptations and negative external influences. Wearing this amulet can serve as a daily reminder to stay on the path of righteousness and avoid harmful distractions.

5. Symbolism and Design of Phra Pidta Amulets

  • The Phra Pidta amulet usually shows the figure with his hands covering his face, sometimes in different postures (such as sitting or standing), depending on the specific tradition of the temple or monk who blessed the amulet.
  • Some versions of the amulet may also have sacred symbols or Yantras (sacred geometrical designs) on the reverse side, which are believed to offer additional protection or spiritual benefits.

6. Why People Believe in Its Power

  • The Phra Pidta amulet is often blessed by highly revered monks, which adds to its spiritual potency. Many people believe that wearing an amulet blessed by a well-known monk or temple gives the amulet extra spiritual energy and power.
  • Stories of wearers experiencing miraculous escapes from danger or sudden success after acquiring the amulet further fuel its popularity and belief in its effectiveness.

Phra Pidta represents spiritual mindfulness, protection, and prosperity in Theravada Buddhism. People wear Phra Pidta amulets for protection from harm, to bring good fortune, and to remind themselves to stay focused on their spiritual practice. His state of mind is one of deep meditation and mindfulness, symbolizing the need to turn inward and avoid distractions from the external world. For those seeking spiritual or material success, this amulet is considered a powerful and meaningful tool.
