Lately, well, the last couple of years, we have had a number of buyers from the USA, Australia, Germany, Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong who bought single Thai pendants over $500 USD, or groups of pendants over $1,000 USD. Buddha, Jatukam, and Luang Phor Tuad monk seem to be the most popular higher priced amulets.
Thai Buddhist amulets can vary widely in price based on their rarity, condition, age, and the monk or temple associated with their creation. Here’s a breakdown of the types that can sell for over $500, and where they can be found, along with the top prices for the most valuable amulets:
1. Somdej Toh Amulets
- Somdej Toh amulets are among the most coveted in Thailand and are often referred to as the “King of Amulets.” The most famous Somdej Toh amulets were made by Somdej Phra Buddhacharn (Toh), a legendary monk from Wat Rakhang in the 19th century.
- Genuine Somdej Wat Rakhang amulets from this era can sell for tens of thousands of dollars. Rare ones can reach upwards of $30,000 to $100,000 depending on the condition, provenance, and material used.
- Somdej amulets from later generations can still be valuable, often priced from $500 to several thousand dollars. These are commonly found at reputable amulet markets in Bangkok, such as the Tha Prachan Amulet Market near the Grand Palace.
2. Luang Pu Thuat Amulets
- Luang Pu Thuat is a revered monk from Southern Thailand, famous for his miracles. Amulets depicting him are highly sought after for their protective powers and the belief that they can prevent danger, especially in car accidents.
- Original and early edition Luang Pu Thuat amulets, particularly those made from Wat Chang Hai or Wat Chao Phor in the early to mid-20th century, can sell for $5,000 to $50,000, depending on rarity and condition.
- Newer Luang Pu Thuat amulets, especially those blessed in recent decades, typically range from $300 to $2,000, with premium materials and designs fetching higher prices.
3. Phra Pidta Amulets
- The Phra Pidta amulet, which depicts a figure covering its eyes, is believed to offer strong protection from harm and shield the wearer from negative influences. Certain rare versions of this amulet can fetch prices above $500.
- Particularly valuable are Phra Pidta amulets made from rare materials such as black jade or petrified wood and blessed by famous monks like Luang Pu Toh from Wat Pradoochimplee. These can sell for $1,000 to $10,000.
4. Other High-Value Amulets
- Amulets created by highly respected monks such as Ajahn Mun, Luang Por Ngern, and Luang Phor Pae, Luang Pu Klai, are also highly valued. Prices for these amulets can range from $500 to several thousand dollars depending on rarity and history.
- Phra Kring amulets, which are often associated with healing and luck, can reach $1,000 to $50,000 for rare and original versions, especially if made at famous temples like Wat Suthat.
Where to Find Authentic Amulets
Our Thai Amulet Store has a number of really nice amulets over $500. Most of them are Ajahn Chamnian amulets. This is a monk in his 80s who established the famous Wat Tham Seua Buddhist temple in Krabi about 45 years ago. He is one of Thailand’s lucky or Good Luck Monks people love and really collect his amulets. Here are the few very unique – and one-of-a-kind Aj. Chamnian amulets we have for over $500.
- The best places to find authentic high-value amulets offline are well-established amulet markets and shops in Thailand:
- Tha Prachan Amulet Market (Bangkok)
- Pantip Plaza (Bangkok, but now less focused on amulets)
- Wat Rakhang Temple shops for Somdej Toh amulets
- Wat Chang Hai for Luang Pu Thuat amulets (Southern Thailand)
- Reputable dealers often have websites, but caution is needed to avoid fakes. You can also visit well-known temples where monks make and bless amulets.
Top Prices for Amulets
- The most valuable Thai Buddhist amulets can exceed $100,000, with top-tier Somdej Wat Rakhang, Luang Pu Thuat originals, and Phra Kring amulets holding auction-level prices. Collectors and devotees alike are willing to pay these amounts for the spiritual, historical, and protective significance attached to them.
In the past we have not purchased many high-end pendants that will cost over $300 or so. There are a couple of reasons, one of which is that the Buddhist temples here in Thailand don’t sell many of those high-priced amulets, and so their availability is limited. This happened with Jatukam pendants especially. We bought all the good Jatukam Ramathep pendants we could find at the main temple where they are made, and now there are very few to find every trip.
Anyway, with any pendant over $500 we are afraid to buy it because we just don’t know how long we will have to keep it in stock before someone buys it. There are so many beautiful pendants between $500 and $1,000 that we could purchase – but we need to know exactly what you want so we have a good idea that we’ll be able to sell them once we buy them.
If you are a Buddha pendant collector, or if you would just like to buy a couple of great pendants that you won’t be able to find on your own, let us know.
Ideally we need to know exactly what you want – Buddha? Jatukam? Sothorn Buddha? Chinnarat Buddha? Size. Case type – waterproof, stainless steel traditional? Stainless ornately designed? Solid silver ornate? Gold traditional? Etc. If you contact us to help you find something that really is custom and what you want, please be ready to tell us all of these variables so we can find exactly what you want.
Price? We need to know how much you are willing to pay. I think if you’re paying under $2,000 we can help you. If you want to pay much more than that, I think it would be much better if you come to Thailand directly yourself and purchase an pendant like that.
How we like to work it is once we have all your requirements for the pendants we will tell you the day we are going to the temple to look for you. When we are there we can send you individual photos of the pendants and tell you what they would cost. Recently we did this for one of our premium pendant buyers located in Indonesia and I think it worked well. You would have to be available by email during the time we are at the temple, so keep in mind we’re 12-13 hours ahead of USA time, and less behind most other places.
So we can show you a couple pendants and give you the prices and you can choose from them. If you want one of the pendants you can send Paypal right away and we’ll see it through email on our phone and purhase the pendant for you right away. Or, you can send Western Union within 24 hours and we will come back and pick it up for you.
This seems to be the best way to work it. We’ve helped about a dozen pendant buyers make big purchases like this and haven’t had any problems.
